Campeonate de España Universitario 2009

Last weekend I visited Vigo (1st to 3rd of May). There were Spanish University Championships in orienteering and taekwondo.

I do orienteering. It was a really nice weekend. It started on Friday morning when Emili picked me up to go to airport. We arrived to airport 5.30am, so not too many sleep at that night. At airport we met with other orienteering people and also with students who do taekwondo. It was great! Everybody were dressed in same UPV colours. Also there where students from Universidad de Valencia and one other school in Valencia.

Our flight was from Valencia to Madrid and from Madrid to Santiago de Compostela. From Santiago we went by bus to Vigo.

On Firday evening we had Model Event (it is like an example race to know what to expect in real race). On Saturday we had middle distance (I got a 9yh place of 54th, good result! also I was in highest ranking from UPV runners) and at evening Sprint (it was my first sprint in Spain).

At evening we had little free time to get know Vigo.

On Sunday we had a long distance, and this wasn't my best race at all :) It was quite hard physically (for example the difference between the lowest and highest point was 305 meters).

After competitions we took the same way back to Valencia. It was a really awesome weekend!

Madrid

Next weekend(from 1st to 3rd of May) I'm going with four friends to Madrid. We have a plan to see as much as possible- the city centre(Plaza de Mayor, Gran Via), some famous museums, football stadium of Real. We also want to visit Toledo, if we have enough time. I'm going to write how it was after the trip.

Fiesta in Alcoy/Alcoi

Being a member of orienteering club, I had a change to participate in UPV-O training camp in Alcoi. It started on Friday evening and ended on Sunday, but unfortunately I participated only on Friday and Saturday.

Alcoy (in Spain) or Alcoi (in Valencian) is a city and municipality located in the province of ALicante, Spain.

This week (
on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of April) was there the Valencian Community’s most impressive Christians & Moors Festival.

I had change to participate on Friday evening fiesta and you can see some pictures on the fallowing sideshow and I generated a video from those pictures.

Easter in Spain

The Easter Week, known in Spain as Semana Santa is the most important celebration in the country. The festivities begin with the Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) and end with Lunes de Pascua (Easter Monday). It is a celebration of life itself and the whole country comes alive. The Catholic Church in Spain is passionate about Easter celebrations.

From Maundy Thursday to Easter, every day there are processions with people costumed. They are carrying crosses and holy statues. It looks really interesting, especially during the night- there are a lot of people on the streets who are watching this impressive parade.

Las Fallas 2009

Las Fallas are a Valencian traditional celebration in praise of Saint Joseph in Valencia, Spain. The term Falles refers to both the celebration and the monuments created during the celebration.

This celebration is really impressive, espacially the parade of costumed women and the process of burning the statues. Every day during the fallas there are fireworks(at night)  and Mascletàs(at 2 in the afternoon), which is really loud. More information about this celebration you can find here.

My first competition in Spain - Sevilla

I just joined with Universidad de Valencia orienteering club. In Estonia I run, but not too often, it is more just a hobby what I do max 5 times a year.

Here, in Spain, I will be competing in Elite class. Yeah, almost professional level :)

So, my first competition. It was WRE (World Ranking Event), so people who were there were in really good level!

My first race I felt that my physical conditions are not good at all! In Estonia I didn't do sports too regularly. And in Estonia the highest point is 318 meters, here in one race the difference between lowest and highest point is averagely 300 meters. My first thoughts were - I should not run in Elite class :)

But after the second day, I started feeling better. My result didn't count, because I had forgotten to take on point, but at least I started feeling, that I have so much to improve.
